Oxford traffic jam number one

After a quiet night in the Boat House Inn car park we headed to a park and ride on the other side of Oxford. It was a distance of 9 miles [we are in England] less than 15 Kilometers, should have been an easy drive, we did leave early. But with road closures, road works and crazy traffic, we arrived at the Park and Ride an hour and a half later. Very frustrating. With the help of a German man in a motorhome we negotiated the pay machine for our carpark stay and headed on the bus into Oxford.
Walking tour of Oxford
We booked a free walking tour of Oxford at 11.00 and even with our long delay we were early and had time for a coffee in a cafe, which was full of students on their laptops. We have enjoyed free walking tours in many places an have found them a great way to get an overview of the place and gaining local information. When I say a free tour , it’s not entirely free but donation based and you pay at the end according to what you think the tour was worth. Our tour guide, a former Oxford student took us to to several locations and explained how the university town works. He was both informative and entertaining with amusing anecdotes of life in Oxford. Below are photos of some of the places we visited. He was a good tour guide and we decided he deserved a good donation at the end of the tour. After about 3 hours we were ready for lunch and a drink so we headed to the covered market and found a Greek cafe for lunch. The covered market was an interesting place, but most of the fresh food vendors were replaced by cafes and take away food vendors.

With so many great doors in Oxford it was impossible to pick out a door of the day. So below I have chosen six doors for those door lover out there.You pick out the best and let us know, a very hard decision.
Traffic jam number two
Having had enough of town tourism – we had seen enough and it was time to return to the camper. Back to the Park and Ride and on the road again to our next destination, another park and ride at Canterbury. Here we would stay for two nights before catching our ferry from Dover to Dunkirk. From Oxford to Canterbury, it is a journey of 133 Miles or 215 Kilometres. This should have taken three and a half hours in our slow motorhome but due to a truck which had caught on fire along the motorway, our journey took us five hours. Exhausted from a busy day of sightseeing and two traffic jams we reached the park and ride at Canterbury, had a quiet evening. We decided to sleep in the next morning.
