Nagyatad, Hungary Aug 12, 2010

We now sit in a small campsite in south Hungary situated in a small village called Nagyatad.

It is not where we had planned to be but as we had left the Thermal camping later than planned on Monday and had done some shopping we were not so far along the road as we should have been. Still some things happen for a reason and as it was getting late we saw a sign for Camping Idyll on the main road. It was a quick decision that turned out to be a very good one.

Driving down the very rough and sometimes potholed road we entered a small village and started to doubt if we read the sign right but as we arrived we were pleased to see a very lovely park like camping ground. Originally a small farm, it was very run down and the very nice dutch couple Jeroene and Musu, who own and run it have spent a lot of time fixing up the buildings and making the grounds park like. It is very clean and tidy as you would expect from the dutch, it’s a little Holland in the Hungarian countryside. They also have animals, goats, sheep, chickens and ducks which makes it a nice atmosphere.
Unfortunately we turned up a bit late on monday as they have a small restaurant that does an African dinner twice a week. The wife is African, we were a little disappointed as it would have been nice to try it, and as we were sitting on our own having our dinner we could hear the sounds of laughter, so we felt a little left out. Almost everyone else in the campground was there, still we had a nice evening later when the bar opened and we had a chance to talk with some other campers. Just about everyone here is Dutch, as the last campsite we had no dutch, just German,Hungarian and Italian, apparently the dutch prefer the smaller quieter camp sites and as the last one was a thermal camping they can be pretty busy.
We have decided to stay here a couple of days and get a few small jobs done on the camper, Ewout has been planning to paint the wheel rims since we left Holland and it would be a good chance to do it as the weather is nice, also the rubber strap that holds the exhaust pipe up has snapped and the owner of the park has offered his drill and found some good thick leather that will do the job.

We have also had the chance to visit the larger town nearby called Pecs, which has a very modern shopping complex and some very nice older buildings.

We have had the good fortune to have some very nice camp neighbors who have been a delight to get to know. Hilly and Oene have been very good company, and Oene was very helpful to Ewout with fixing the awning on the camper. We went out for a Hungarian meal with them last night and enjoyed the most delicious goulash that I have ever eaten. Good food, good company, doesn’t get any better than this.

Well all good things come to an end and its been a good time for some maintenance and a bit of a cleaning as well. Can’t be all rest and relaxation.

So its time to hit the road again, next stop Serbia.
