All good things must come to an end, so the saying goes. Now we have come to the end of our trip for 2014. To say we had a good trip would be an understatement because we had a GREAT trip. Although our trip was for 6 months we actually travelled less kilometres and went a bit slower. On our usual 3 month trips we averaged about 10,000 kilometres, this trip was just under 12,000 kilometres, and we stayed in places longer and took it slower. Some days we travelled 20kms and said “this place looks nice” and stopped and stayed for a couple of days.
Our trips always start in Holland as that is where the “Bunyip” lives, from there went drove into Germany, a quick drive through Austria and into Italy where explored for nearly 7 weeks. A ferry trip took us to Greece where again we spent nearly 7 weeks. Back on another ferry to Trieste [Italy] where we only stayed 1 day before spending time in Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Our last three weeks were spent in Germany for one week and then into Holland for the final stage. A total of nine countries in all. The “Bunyip” performed very well despite the bad roads and the hills we made it climb. Apart from battery problems it took us everywhere we wanted to go and kept us comfortable during our trip.
If you have read this blog from the start then you would have read over 49,000 words in 55 posts, almost a small book.
We have been back now for 7 weeks and getting into some sort of routine. Ewout started work 2 days after we returned and is working at the Adelaide Oval and also doing some house painting with friend Jeff. Jenny has been catching up with some babysitting of the grandchildren and setting up our home. We are staying at Seaford Rise and have rented this house for 6 months. After travelling for 6 months and before that staying at various places it will be good to settle in one place.
The last few photos of Ewout show him with straggly hair as he didn’t have a haircut for over a year. The good news is that all had been tidied up after a trip the barber.
We will be updating some of our information pages in the blog which will mainly interest other motor homers and we will post those when completed.
The latest news is that we have booked out next trip. To get the early bird specials we have to book in advance to get good prices on our tickets. We will be setting off a bit later this time at the end of April 2015 and we plan to do another 6 month trip.
A thank you to all the people who had read our blog this year and especially those who have commented and sent us emails, we have really appreciated the feedback and encouragement. We will keep you all informed with updates until we set off again to continue our travels.
We were also privileged to meet some wonderful people, stay with friends and family and feel welcomed in each county we visited. Thank you all, there are too many to mention by name.
Many people don’t venture to Eastern Europe in their motorhomes but we love it and the people seem more relaxed and grateful that you have taken an interest in their country. There is nothing scary about the eastern countries so if you are planning your next motorhome trip consider going east.
Below are 9 photos, one from each of the countries we visited during our trip.
