Compulsory Equipment and Road Rules

Before you set off. (what do you need)

Each European country has its own list of requirements for equipment that you must carry on board your vehicle. Although we have never been checked anywhere it’s not a good idea to go unprepared and break any of the country’s laws. A good site to check out is the Automobile Association It has a country by country checklist of what is required.  We carry with us spare light globes (bulbs), Hi Vis vests x 2, a reflective triangle, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. In France now they require you to carry 2 breathalyser test kits which can be bought at petrol stations.

Road Rules.

Again each country has its own set of rules, but basically they are the same with a few variations. eg:  most eastern Europe countries drive with their lights on at all times. Speed limits vary etc.

The craziest rule we have come across is in Romania where it is a law that you can’t drive a dirty vehicle. Along the main thoroughfares there are rows upon rows of car and truck washes, so although the cars may look unroadworthy there is no excuse to have a dirty one. (this law looks to us to have been made by a Politian with an interest in car washes.)

It is a good idea to check out each country’s road rules on the AA site before you go as we can’t tell you what to do, just point you in the right direction.
